Bollywood movie posters are usually painted. Even some current films continue that
tradition. There is no denying though that the painted ones are more eye-catching and characteristic of the
genre. Here list of classic Hindi films and a short description of their posters and what made them
classics.
Bharat Mata (1957) – Also known as “Mother India” shows a woman’s determination to
rise through poverty and support her family. The old painted Bollywood poster shows the main character
wearing a choli and sari, with a rifle in hand.
Awara (1951) – The film is about Raj, a boy who grows up in poverty, and his romance
with Rita who came from the privileged class. The painted monochromatic poster for the movie shows Raj in the
foreground, raising his arms. The background shows a close-up of Rita.
Bobby (1973) – The poster is a striking, almost
psychedelic painting of the 2 main characters in each other’s arms. Filmed in 1973, the poster captures how
the era can be reflected in the film advertisements as well. The main plot itself is a common theme regarding
romance in the middle of social differences; but with a more sincere take on teenage romance.
Salaam
Bombay (1988) – is about a lone boy’s struggle to earn 500 Rupees in a big city (Mumbai). The poster shows the
main character, Krishna, looking into the window of an automobile.
Bandit Queen (1994) – Based on the life of Phoolan Devi, a woman who became a gang
leader. It tells a tale of oppression and revenge. There are 2 posters available. The painted one shows
Phoolan standing in uniform with a rifle slinged across her shoulders to her back. Another poster shows
Phoolan with rifle raised over her head in front of a crowd.
Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Naa (2008) – A musical romance comedy with the perfect
cast. The poster shows the whole main cast in 2 variants. One
with everyone in a casual pose standing, and the other on a couch.
