Framed Movie Poster 

A framed movie poster is a way of preserving your favorite movie posters. However, it is much more than that.

Movie posters are collectibles and many of them increase in value over time. Especially old movie posters or vintage movie posters, original movie posters, autographed movie posters classic movie posters and movie posters that are particularly in demand like the Star Wars movie posters.

But what do you know about framing movie posters? Most of us don’t know anything and can be taken advantage of. Reputable movie poster framers will give you want you without selling you “extras” that are not really necessary.

Unless you have a Picasso, it is not essential of have armed guards hired to protect your poster.

Here are a few suggestions gleaned from reading about framing posters.

One, the frame itself just doesn’t matter than much. It is just for looks, so whatever suits your fancy is fine. Obviously you could spend a lot of money on the frame and that is fine if that is what you want. But it will not have anything to do with keeping the poster in good shape. What matters the most the front and back of the poster itself. That is what you are protecting.

On the front, you do not want to use glass. It could break for one thing. Even the expensive “conservation” glass that some sell can break. And moisture is trapped between the glass and the poster. Water in the right places is great but in the wrong places can do a lot of damage. And even if you add spacers, it is likely that your poster will touch the glass at various spots. This causes the poster to buckle and has to be fixed. Paper “remembers” and so the back of the poster has to be told to remember to straighten out, not to wrinkle.

What is recommended for framing movie posters on the front is plexiglass. Now, it is not that easy though because there are different kinds of plexiglass. Many types do have UV protection is vital to movie poster preservation. So get a high quality type of plexiglass and make sure it is about the thickness as a glass covering would be. One benefit is that it is hard to get dirty and so little if any cleaning is ever needed. But if you do clean it, don’t use an ammonia type cleaning product or your poster may have a cloud appear over it!

If your posture is located somewhere that glare is a problem, there is non glare plexiglass options available. Whether you get that or not, you still want a good quality glass with the UV protection.

And now about protecting the back of your poster.

You don’t want acid on your poster. And paper does absorb acid from the backing. I have a painted from my mother that is about ruined as a result of this problem. There is a good bit of yellowing and stain showing through to the front of the painting. Often the damage is done before you know what happened. Better to have the right kind of framing back to start with.

So what is everybody doing? Basic foamcore seems to be the in thing. However, to the surprise of many, it is not acid free. As mentioned already, many learn too late after the damage has occurred.

For just a little more money, you can get foamboard that is acid-free. It works good for people who have a relatively inexpensive poster to those who have posters worth many thousands of dollars.
